Introduction to Engineering at
SMU
Beginning your Engineering education at our university is a wise choice, in doing so you enter the Dalhousie Associated University Engineering System, and when you successfully complete your 2-year Diploma of Engineering at Saint Mary's University, you will gain automatic entrance to Dalhousie University, situated just a few blocks away, where you will finish your Engineering degree.

A formal Memorandum of Understanding exists between Dalhousie and each of the Associated Universities. Article 4.0/1 states:
"The Faculty of Engineering at Dalhousie University will treat students from the Associated University programs on an equal basis with students who entered the program at Dalhousie University. Academic merit will be the only deciding factor on admission to disciplines."
After your first year at Saint Mary's University you must choose a particular discipline of Engineering, as the second year program is discipline specific. The disciplines available at Saint Mary's are Environmental, Biosystems, Chemical, Electrical/Computer Civil, Industrial, Metallurgical, Mining, and Mechanical. Three of the courses required for Chemical Engineering are not available at Saint Mary's, but if you are interested in that discipline, arrangements can be made for you to take them at Dalhousie on a Letter of Permission.
Saint Mary's also offers a four-year degree program with a major in mathematics and a Diploma in Engineering. To receive this degree/diploma, students must complete the DipEng program and specialization requirements in addition to mathematics courses and electives. The math courses are chosen in consultation with the Department of Mathematics and the electives must satisfy the requirements for the Bachelor of Science degree. Four-year BSc/DipEng degrees with other concentrations can be arranged.
Engineering classes at Saint Mary's are relatively small - a maximum of thirty students in a session. We specialize in personalized instruction and try to create an atmosphere in which students and faculty can work together productively. We hope you will enjoy your experience at Saint Mary's.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How and when do I choose my discipline?
A. At the end of 1st year, students are required to complete a
Discipline Choice form (available from the engineering secretary in
MM213-B). Students rank their chosen discipline on the form which
is forwarded to Dalhousie for Placeholder status (conditional
acceptance to Dalhousie). No student has a guarantee of
acceptance into their discipline of choice. Entry into
specific disciplines is a matter of academic competition and
evaluation is made purely on academic standing. A
student who completes the 2-yr. Diploma with a G.P.A. of 2.0 or
higher is assured a place in the Bachelors degree program. Some
borderline students near 2.0 may not get into their first
discipline choice, however, this is just the same for Dalhousie
students as it is for students from any associated university.
Q. What is the passing grade for the Diploma in
Engineering?
A. To qualify for the Diploma in Engineering, a student is required to achieve a minimum quality point average of 2.00 (C)
