SMU's English as a Second Language (ESL) program
Did you know that you can begin your study
abroad experience at SMU while working on perfecting you English
language skills?
As one of Canada's most internationalized campuses, Saint Mary's University attracts students from around the world, many of whom have not previously studied in English. At Saint Mary's, we offer the unique opportunity to study English at our leading Languages Canada accredited Teaching English as a Second Language Centre (TESL). Benefits of studying English on the Saint Mary's campus include:
• Full immersion in an English -speaking environment
• Access to university facilities such as the library, computer labs, and athletic facilities
• Instruction from highly qualified instructors, many with Master's degrees, second languages, and international experience!
Students who have the academic requirements to enter university are offered conditional acceptance to Saint Mary's, conditional upon the successful completion of a test of English Language proficiency, English for Academic Purposes (EAP), or the University Bridging Program (UBP). Students who successfully complete Level 6 of the EAP program or the University Bridging Program will be accepted to Saint Mary's providing they have the academic requirements and will not be required to write an additional test of English language proficiency (TOEFL, MELAB, IELTS, CAEL, CanTEST).
The Conversation Partner program, the International Centre, and cultural activities through the TESL Centre also help to ease the transition into the Canadian university environment.
